I am very active and intimate with my work. You might say I am extremely “hands on” – in late 2005 I threw away my brushes and began painting exclusively with my fingers...and my heart. My paintings are not planned or composed, I paint purely by feeling.
Each step in my process contributes greatly to the final piece. I begin by adding a light texture to the canvas, still using only my fingers. I then begin filling in the background. I continue to add layers and colors to the background until the figures and forms begin to emerge. I don't force my pieces but rather let them evolve in their own time.
I enhance the light and shadow with more colors and layers until the figures and forms are fully developed. If you look closely, you will find that in most of my works the obvious figure is not the only spirit in the piece.
Creating art is not a choice for me...
It is my way of interpreting and understanding my relationship with the world.
I create to understand my own emotions and reactions to the world. It’s a way of slowing things down, of taking snapshots of my thoughts, dreams and experiences, and looking at them in their own right without judgment or attempts to change the spirit in which they were born. My work largely examines human relationships, both mental and physical; why we sometimes let fade the most enriching and keep ourselves bound to the ones that harm.
Visual manifestations of emotion and physical reaction - Portraits of the strain created in the body when and heart and mind disagree, the freedom of movement in joy and hope, the quiet stillness of contemplation, the breadth and stretching of reaching for dreams, or the taut despair of loneliness.
Ultimately my work is about finding the light by accepting the shadows. Reaching peace by experiencing chaos.
